FARGO

NEWSDAY

When you have dialogue like "You're darn tootin," "You bet" and "Heckuva deal" in a movie about kidnapping, multiple murders and mutilation in the American heartland, you know you're in a world that could only spring from the minds of David Lynch or the Coen brothers.

You're in luck with "Fargo," it's the Coen brothers ...

Frances McDormand's Marge Gunderson, chief of police of tiny Brainerd ("Home of Paul Bunyan") is a fabulous Coen brothers' character, homespun, unflappable and seven month's pregnant ...

McDormand's never been better. She plays Marge Gunderson with such a perfect blend of professional wile and earnest folksiness that you have a smile on your face the entire time you're watching her ...

A word of warning. Humor and violence bang into each other with regularity, and you can get a laugh caught in your throat. By the end of "Fargo," the body count is at least a half-dozen, and some of the killings are horrifically graphic.
