Joel Coen wins Best Director Award at Cannes for "Fargo"
APCANNES, France
Minnesota native Joel Coen has been named best director at the Cannes Film Festival for "Fargo," an off-beat comedy about a man who hires somebody to kidnap his wife.
Coen, whose brother Ethan produced the movie, was the only American to win a prize in the 49th festival.
The movie was filmed in central Minnesota and eastern North Dakota.
The Coen brothers' movie "Barton Fink" won the grand prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. The brothers are from St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
